Introduction

Born into the modest surroundings of Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district in September 1998, Bajrang Prasad Yadav’s life was marked by the simplicity of rural living and the complex challenges it brought along. Growing up, Bajrang witnessed the wrath of floods first-hand, a common problem in his region. The rivers, often seen as lifelines, turned into sources of destruction, disrupting lives and livelihoods. Amidst this chaos, Bajrang observed his father extending help to those affected, an act of kindness and resilience that planted the seeds of inspiration in him.

His father’s actions taught him an invaluable lesson about the power of human will, encapsulated in the lines of Gopal Vyas,

“बांधे जाते इंसान, कभी तूफान न बाँधे जाते हैं, काया जरूर बाँधी जाती । बाँधे न इरादे जाते हैं।” 

“Humans are bound, not the storms; the body is certainly tied, but not the intentions.” 

This philosophy became the backbone of Bajrang’s dreams.

Educational Journey

Bajrang’s academic journey was a testament to his determination. Until the eighth grade, he attended a local school, excelling in his studies. The pursuit of a better education led him to a school 7-8 km away from his home, a distance he covered daily on his bicycle. His matriculation in 2014 marked the beginning of a new chapter, as he aspired to continue his studies in Allahabad. He excelled in his secondary schooling with subjects like Hindi, Mathematics, Physics, and Chemistry in 2016. He finished his graduation in 2019. Bajrang’s academic path was characterized by his hard work and dedication. 

The UPSC Dream

The Union Public Service Commission (UPSC) examination, known for its rigor and prestige, caught Bajrang’s attention in his school days. He started looking at the UPSC question papers in class 12th. Although initially not serious, his interest in the UPSC exams grew over time, especially during his graduation. Despite a setback in the National Defence Academy (NDA) examination, his resolve only strengthened. After his graduation in 2019, he joined Vision IAS for coaching, a decision supported by the sale of wheat crops, highlighting his family's sacrifices for his dream.

Overcoming Adversity

Bajrang’s journey was not devoid of challenges. The year 2020 was particularly challenging; the COVID-19 pandemic led to the postponement of his exams, and a personal tragedy struck as his father was murdered for his philanthropic efforts. These events could have hampered any spirit, yet he found the strength to persevere. He was emotionally supported by his family, especially his younger brother.

His first attempt at the UPSC exams was promising, clearing the Prelims but falling short in the Mains by a mere 27 marks. Undeterred, he continued in Hindi medium for his second attempt, narrowly missing the Prelims cutoff. However, it was his third attempt in 2022 that turned the tide. Under Drishti IAS’s mentorship program, he received specialized coaching for Hindi medium aspirants, paving his way to success despite personal losses, including the death of another close family member and his grandfather just before the main exams and interview, respectively.

Victory and Reflection

Bajrang Prasad Yadav’s success in the UPSC exams, securing an All India Rank of 454, was a moment of collective pride and joy. His journey was more than a personal achievement; it was the fulfillment of his father’s dreams and the aspirations of his entire village. Reflecting on his journey, Bajrang emphasizes that his win was not just his own but a victory for every individual who supported him, believed in him, and shared in his struggles and dreams.
